Crystal Thompson has been creating custom garments and specialty costumes for nearly 40 years, collaborating with designers to bring ambitious concepts to life for productions such as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Pose, 30 Rock and Sesame Street. Her work has been seen in many productions at The Metropolitan Opera as well. She served as Madonna’s personal tailor for a decade and currently works closely with Patti LuPone. Throughout her career, she has created custom pieces for acclaimed artists including FKA Twigs and Mary J. Blige through her work with Stella McCartney. Crystal is also recognized for her expertise in designing and fitting for complex body shapes, developing and building distinctive looks for Lizzo and Rebel Wilson on films including How to Be Single. Her five years in the New York City Ballet costume shop provided a deep understanding of movement and the relationship between the body and garment, informing every aspect of her craft.
Alongside her work in costume design and tailoring, Crystal is an interdisciplinary artist whose immersive installations combine textiles, projection, sculpture, and light to create environments that invite reflection and wonder. Her fine art portfolio and current projects can be explored at crystalthompsonart.com, where she shares the evolving intersection of her decades of craftsmanship with her contemporary artistic practice.
